Strategic training planning for the future
We are constantly analysing the current and future skills needs of our sectors and adjusting our qualifications and the system for attaining new skills in response to new demands.
We are developing strategic training plans for each of our industry sectors which will outline for the next 3 - 5 year period:
- The current and emerging skill needs of each industry sector we represent
- How PaMPITO is adjusting the system for acquiring and developing skills in need
The role that training providers, employers and the government play in ensuring our industry sectors have the skills they need for now and the future
Skills utilisation
Our leadership role also involves supporting companies to maximise the value of their training investments. All too often we see companies hand over the responsibility for up-skilling their staff to training providers. Yet research shows that a joint responsibility is necessary. As part of our leadership role we work together with companies and training providers and support companies to adopt a ‘culture of learning’ within their organisation.
Having a learning culture is about using everyday work activities as opportunities for learning. It’s also about providing employees with opportunities to practise and use the new skills they are acquiring.
Typically people think that training and learning new skills is about going on a course, learning something, then coming back and using it. Research shows that for any training intervention to be truly effective, preparation and follow up are also required.
The diagram below summarises the results of a research project that found more value was actually derived from the pre-work and the follow up phases of a training intervention than the actual intervention itself. Yet in terms of where effort and investment in training was placed, very little pre-work and even less follow up were carried out. The ‘pre’ and ‘post’ phases of the training process are important phases that contribute the greatest areas of return on training investments.
